NOTES: ADDITIONS/CORRECTIONS I WOULD MAKE IF GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY: Bring it all down to bedrock as first proposed 9/'02 (and/or) 'Harvest' Bedrock that is to be covered by the Path train and use it in the walkways to the reflecting pools. An additional 'touch stone' Create the 'Tomb of the Unknowns' in translucent Alabaster and light it internally to glow from within, change shape to two squares that touch 'When two become one'. Move flags at tomb to run parallel with promenade above Vault for remains. Use the Vault wall that faces the park to inscribe list of soldiers names 'KIA' since war on terrorism began, ongoing tribute. Use beams from Fresh Kills for interior spaces/cases of museum. Restore Calder sculpture and move it to left of WTC2 Continue Liebskinds 'Path of Heroes' to site level leading to and ending at footprint surround walkways. Render Overview to incorporate Liebskind entry onto Amphitheater overall 'fit' view, Render Terraced Gardens. Depict example(s) for sculptural walkway style, neoclassical, neodecco. Enlarge reflecting pool slightly, show handicap access ramps (2 sides) entries to footprints.
COMMENTS (POST LMDC MEMORIAL COMPETITION): I have four children, in working this concept for the past two years they and their friends have brought an intimate detail to light that sometimes as an artist you wish to have the viewer resolve. Children have told me (re: the conceptual) they see people holding hands, huge flowers, candlesticks...while adults choose to see the lattice design of the former structure. Much like the Salvador Dali that lets you see either a vase or a face profile, By gently bending the upward struts of the original lattice and touching them to form an arch, this concepts forces you to see either remembrance or hope. It forces you to look upward and remember the supreme sacrifice made by so many. There is a time and place for minimalist art. This event and memorial needs to be greater than looking down somberly. Let's Create a public space that allows for public assembly. Have the memorial be incorporated into the fabric of our daily lives including it in celebrations not cloistering it off to blackness with glimpses of light. For as minimalist as the Tribute In Lights were they made you look upward, We need to pick up where they left off. Looking up to those who paid the ultimate price for our freedoms, bring the sphere, the last beam out 'home'...The Memorial needs to be...grand.
